Meet the residents: Good Impact
In each newsletter issue, we introduce an organisation that works at Publix House. This time: Anja Dilk, Head of Service at Good Impact, and Bianca Kriel, Editor at Good News & Good Impact.
What is the core of your work?
Our magazine has been around since 2010 and has been called Good Impact Magazine since the beginning of 2023. Our focus is on constructive journalism that not only highlights problems but also strives to find sustainable solutions. On the news platform Good News, we counter the flood of negative news with good news – not feel-good news, but above all news about laws, developments and ideas that could make the world a little more sustainable.
What are you committed to?
Journalism must not stop at critical questioning, but must seek answers: What now? In other words: What ideas for solutions are there anywhere in society, how viable are they, what can they achieve? We publish descriptive and constructive long reads that combine in-depth research, critical analysis and the search for inspiring solutions to social problems.
What has been your greatest success in recent months?
There have actually been three: the Andrea von Braun Foundation's sponsorship of our issue on the topic of ‘Moore braucht das Land’. The first live event for the new issue in the fully booked Publix conference hall in June 2024: the Good Talk XXL. And our new membership, which is attracting more and more readers.
What does journalism urgently need?
It should scrutinise itself more often, needs more diversity of perspectives and an appetite for new forms of journalistic storytelling. Journalism should not just be a watchdog of democracy, but should also look at how society could deal with problems constructively. And look for ways to make people really enjoy quality journalism again.
Who or what absolutely deserves more attention?
The climate crisis and possible (partial) solutions to it. The people, companies and research institutes that are working on these solutions need to take centre stage.
What is the best reading on the current situation?
Only those who analyse cleverly first will find solutions later, therefore:
Andreas Reckwitz: Verlust. A fundamental problem of modernity
Sebastian Klein: Toxically rich. Why extreme wealth jeopardises our democracy
Ece Temelkuran: How to Lose a Country: The 7 Steps from Democracy to Fascism
What should you listen to or watch now?
Sockenpuppenzoo – Attack on Wikipedia, a podcast by Christoph Schattleitner and Daniel Laufer from SWR. And of course the Good News podcast.
What do you wish for the Publix initiative?
That it blossoms and flourishes like crazy. Publix is a real game changer for smaller independent magazines like ours. It brings people together, creates something new and offers our work a framework that couldn't be better. For great events, for example.
