It's more than just catchy headlines that don't deliver on their promises. When it comes to migration or flight, it's images of anonymous crowds and overcrowded boats, suggestive questions like "Can we do this again?" or buzzwords like "refugee wave" and "asylum shock." Racist stereotypes that play into the hands of those using hate to gain attention.
Racism must not be clickbait! Especially on social media, where quotes are often heavily shortened. Where striking images determine what gets read or clicked away. And where the community is activated to join the discussion with sometimes sensational questions.
BetterPost by Neue Deutsche Medienmacher*innen monitors and analyzes social media posts from editorial teams and comments from readers. We're interested in: How does the language in journalistic posts relate to racism in the comments?
Curious about the results? You can find them in our workshop Racism is Not Clickbait! With our offering, we advise editorial teams and provide guidance for high-quality – because nuanced – reporting on social media.
We demonstrate with current examples how journalism in a society of immigration should look – and how it should not. We write in just a few characters, but critically against racism. We sharpen the eye for sensitive images. And we respond to hate comments with the right words.
