The Hague vs. Berlin? German Foreign Policy in the Middle East: Between International Law and Staatsräson

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is considering issuing arrest warrants against members of the Israeli government for war crimes in Gaza. Meanwhile, an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) affirms that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories violates international law, while South Africa's case against Israel at the ICJ on charges of genocide is proceeding.

Despite these developments, the German government continues its support for the Israeli government, framing it as a "Reason of State." This places Germany in increasing conflict with international law. Together with experts, medico examines these tensions and explores their implications for German foreign policy and the international rules-based order.
