We’re going Publix! Our Opening Conference will take place on Thursday, September 12th, 2024.
About the Opening Conference
Germany’s first centre for journalism and public debate is opening its doors September 12th. Publix brings together knowledge from journalists, civil society actors, academics, authors, creatives, and media professionals all under one roof so that, together, they can forge a new media landscape where public interest is at the forefront.
Publix aims to help sustain a diverse and independent media landscape in Germany and Europe, promote journalistic innovation, counter disinformation and thus strengthen democratic discourse. The Publix Opening Conference marks the start of our joint work on this.

Three Tracks
The Publix Opening Conference is divided into three tracks: PROTOTYPES presents tried-and-tested model projects from journalism and civil society that should be discussed, expanded and established on a wider scale. In FUTURE SKILLS, we explore the skills that people will need to form democratic opinions in the future, and UNKNOWN takes us to developments of which we have so far only seen the tip of the iceberg.
Prototypes
The future is designed in the present. Which model programmes, and forward looking projects are already influencing the development of journalism and the public sphere? Various players present prototypes that are either under development or have already been tested and implemented. They all have the same thing in common: they want to find solutions to the editorial and civil society challenges of our time.
Future Skills
In a world that is constantly changing, categorisation, critical thinking and the ability to adapt are of crucial importance. How do we prepare ourselves as professionals, and also as a civil society, for life in a future characterised by information overload and misinformation? What skills will help us find our bearings? What skills do people need in the editorial society of the 21st century? Experts present useful skills and examples of good practice in their field.
Unknown
The world is many things. Confronted with technological, ecological, cultural, political and economic challenges, we look to the future and ask: What are the great unknowns that will have a major impact on journalistic and civil society work in the future? Which questions do we urgently need to find answers to? What new tools do we need to deal with them? What attitude do we need to adopt towards X? Professionals report on challenging situations where only only limited information is currently visible.

In the heart of Neukölln
On one side is the lively boulevard Hermannstrasse, on the other is the peaceful quietude of the cemetery – and right in the middle is Publix. Our new building is located in an urban and culturally vibrant section of the Neukölln district of Berlin, and a trio of parks are within easy walking distance – Tempelhofer Feld, Anita Berber Park and Körnerpark.
Publix has developed a series of formats to actively engage neighbours, clubs and initiatives in the Neukölln neighbourhood.
The address of the house will be from spring 2024: Hermannstraße 90, 12051 Berlin
The following organisations work permanently in our building and help us breathe life into Publix.
